The Easy Way to get a Hard Working Website

Written on the 14 December 2006 by Altitude Communications

As society's love affair with all things 'on-line' continues, the importance of a functional and sales-producing website, to the success of a business, has never been greater. That being said, however, it is also amazing how many so-called 'professional' websites fail to meet even the minimum standards for functionality, let alone produce measurable results. The good news is that it's no longer difficult to make-over, update or create a website that lives up to the title of "On-line Sales Person."  Here are five simple adjustments you can make that will liven up the usefulness of your website.

  1. First things first - Conduct an audit. Ask yourself ...
"Is my website generating the results I expect or want?"
"How do these results relate to my business goals?"
"Is the style and functionality of my site conducive to achieving these results?"
"Am I targeting the people with the money, desire or impetus to buy my product?"

  2. Be smart -Gone are the days of websites being online brochures, sitting in cyberspace and looking pretty, now consumers are looking for something more. Your website needs to be a practical way of making contact, and interacting with, your customers.  Recently released statistics show that people are now spending on average double the time on the Internet than watching television. To effectively compete your website needs to be consumer-driven, it needs to answer the questions that your customers want answered, and communicate with them when and where they want to be communicated with. For example: did you know that eMail is now the number one form of business communication?

  3. Perfect your settings - Although Microsoft would have us believe otherwise, there are other internet browsers, other than Internet Explorer, and it is vitally important that your website can be viewed correctly in all of them. Make sure that your site is optimised for viewing with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and the Mac-compatible Safari. Remember, you have less than 30 seconds to capture the attention of your prospect and if you're site doesn't load correctly for their browser; they won't stick around or come back. Also, while we're talking about settings, spend some time perfecting your metatags to ensure that your site is optimised in such a way that you pop-up first on search engines.

  4. Ensure functionality ...Bottom-line - your website needs to be functional, easy-to-use and up-to-date. There is nothing worse than logging on to a website that hasn't been updated in the last 6 months.  Remember, your website is your doorway to "Consumer-World," and if your website looks out-dated, and unimpressive, that's the impression your customers will get of your business.  Ensure you website is constructed so you can quickly and easily manage and edit the content yourself.  More importantly, you must ensure your site has the suitable functionality within it, so it will generate the results you want.

  5. Create contact points...So you've managed to get people to look at your website... Congratulations, but what now? It is vitally important that you're able to quickly and easily capture your prospect's details.  You can do this by including a few important features such as sign-up forms, secure on-line order forms, competitions, event sign-ups, online surveys, classifieds, advertising or even the impressive click to call functionality. These contact points allows you to direct your customer's enquiry directly from your website. You're giving yourself the ultimate opportunity for contact, which means you're more likely to make a sale.

Follow these simple hints, and you'll be on your way to creating a hard-working website. But remember, if this all seems too much, and you'd like some assistance in updating your website than give us a call.
